GRAY, SARAH D., ERIK CARLSSON, AND NORMAN C. STAUB. Site of increased vascular resistance during isometric muscle contraction. Am. J. Physiol. 213(3): 683-689. 1967.-We studied the intramuscular vessels during maximal tetanic contraction to localize the site of increased flow resistance. We examined the microcirculation of rats whose calf muscles were rapidly frozen before, during, or after maximal contraction. We found no evidence of compression of the microvasculature. Indeed, counts of functional capillaries per muscle fiber showed significantly more open capillaries within 5 set of the onset of a single maximal tetany compared to the resting condition. In anesthetized dogs we made arteriograms and venograms before, during, and after single maximal tetanic contractions of the calf muscles. We found numerous localized compressions and pinching of both arteries and veins as they entered the muscle or passed between muscle fasciculi. The defects were reproducible and were never seen when the muscle was relaxed. The evidence supports the view that the vascular resistance increase seen during strong muscle contraction is chiefly in the larger supplying vessels rather than in the microcirculation.

Resistance to blood flow in leg muscles of dog during tetanic isometric contraction.
GRAY, SARAH, D., AND NORMAN C. STAUB. Resistance to bloodJEow in leg muscles of dog during tetanic isometric contraction. Am. J. Physiol. 213(3): 677-682. 1967.~We have reinvestigated the effects of tetanic, isometric leg muscle contraction in anesthetized dogs on the resistance to blood flow. In 19 of 20 dogs vascular resistance increased during the contraction. There appear to be two phases o...
متن کاملThe effect of isometric contractions of upper and lower limb muscles on the ultrasonic thickness of the transversus abdominis muscle
Background: The transverse abdominis (TrA) muscle is one of the most important muscles that contribute to the stability of the lumbar spine. Strengthening of trunk muscles that have a significant role in trunk stability is very important in the field of professional sport, sport medicine and rehabilitation of patient with low back pain (LBP). Identifying the exercises that can improve the stren...
متن کاملLocalized Electrical Impedance Myography of the Biceps Brachii Muscle during Different Levels of Isometric Contraction and Fatigue
This study assessed changes in electrical impedance myography (EIM) at different levels of isometric muscle contraction as well as during exhaustive exercise at 60% maximum voluntary contraction (MVC) until task failure. The EIM was performed on the biceps brachii muscle of 19 healthy subjects. The results showed that there was a significant difference between the muscle resistance (R) measured...
متن کاملThe effect of different acute muscle contraction regimens on the expression of muscle proteolytic signaling proteins and genes
Previous studies have reported that different modes of muscle contraction (i.e., eccentric or concentric contraction) with similar contraction times can affect muscle proteolytic responses. However, the effect of different contraction modes on muscle proteolytic response under the same force-time integral (FTI: contraction force × time) has not been investigated. The purpose of this study was t...

Background: The typical features of eccentric exercise-induced muscle damage are delayed-onset muscle soreness (DOMS) and prolonged loss of muscle strength. It has been shown that passive warmth is effective in reducing muscle injury. Due to the interaction of different systems in vivo, we used isolated perfused medial gastrocnemius skeletal muscle to study the direct effect of temperature on t...
